What it does

  1. Crops and resizes your photo to the frame’s exact pixels (for example 1600 × 1200 for most 13.3-inch frames), turning the frame portrait for portrait photos.
  2. Boosts contrast and saturation a little, because the inks are duller than a screen.
  3. Dithers it to the six Spectra 6 colors with Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion: each pixel takes the nearest ink and passes its error on to its neighbors, so areas average out to the right shade.

The photo is dithered to the “pure” palette: black, white, yellow, red, blue and green at full strength (RGB 0/255 values), which is what panel drivers expect. The “muted” preview then shows those same dots in the inks’ measured colors, where white is really a light gray (161, 164, 165), so it looks darker and duller, closer to the real panel on a screen (your eyes adjust to a real frame on the wall, so it won’t look quite that gray). Both come from Pimoroni’s open-source Spectra 6 driver (pimoroni/inky, inky_e673.py). Waveshare recommends Floyd-Steinberg dithering for these panels (Waveshare manual).

Frame makers use their own tuned dithering, so a real frame may look a little different, but this is a good guide to which photos will work. Tips: which photos look good on e-ink. Building your own? The downloaded PNG is ready for a DIY panel.
