Color e-ink photo frames: FAQ

A picture frame with a color electronic-paper screen instead of an LCD. Colored pigment particles move to form the picture, which then stays with no power, so the frame runs on a battery for months or years and looks like a printed photo rather than a glowing screen.

None of the frames we cover needs a subscription to show your own photos. Some charge for extras: SwitchBot’s AI art is $3.99 a month after a 30-day trial, and Bloomin8 has an optional $9.99-a-month Pro plan. Aura Ink includes unlimited photo storage, and Fraimic includes 100 AI creations a year.

Makers claim from about 3 months (Aura Ink, one photo a day, with a front light) to 1-3 years (Bloomin8, one refresh a day). The battery is only used when the picture changes, so the more often it changes, the sooner you recharge.

Roughly 15 seconds to a minute. Bloomin8 quotes about 20 seconds, Aura about 30 seconds, and reviewers timed SwitchBot at 15-30 seconds. The screen flashes while the pigments move; that is normal.

Not without room light: e-paper reflects light like paper and has no backlight. The Aura Ink is the exception among these frames, with a soft front light that switches off when the room is dark.

Spectra 6 panels have six inks: black, white, red, yellow, blue and green. Every other color is made by dithering, mixing dots of those six, so photos look grainy up close and smoother from a few feet away. Bright, simple, high-contrast photos look best.

Most 13.3-inch frames are 1600 x 1200 pixels, about 150 pixels per inch. The 10-inch Reflection Frame fits 1600 x 1200 into a smaller screen (200 ppi). SwitchBot’s 7.3-inch model is 800 x 480, and the big canvases range from 2560 x 1440 (31.5-inch) to 4320 x 3060 (InkPoster Tela 40.5-inch).

When we checked on September 28, 2026: the SwitchBot AI Art Frame (SwitchBot UK and Amazon.co.uk, from £159.99), the Bloomin8 Canvas (Amazon.co.uk and Bloomin8’s own store) and InkPoster (Creative Bloq lists the 13.3-inch Affresco at £650). The Aura Ink was not sold in the UK.

The SwitchBot AI Art Frame 7.3-inch at $149.99 (£159.99 in the UK). The cheapest 13.3-inch frame is the SwitchBot at $349.99, unless you pre-order the Ugreen Gallery at $299, which ships from January 2027.

It depends. E-ink is cordless, glare-free and looks like a print, but colors are muted and pictures change slowly. LCD frames are cheaper, brighter, sharper and can play slideshows and video, but need a power cord.

No. The photo converter runs entirely in your browser: the photo is read, resized and dithered on your own device and is never sent to us or anyone else.
